Note for:   William Vere,   1796 -          Index

Individual Note:
William Vere was a Stone Mason in Shoreditch. On the birth certificate of his sons marriage I note that the names are Vere not DeVere so possibly this is why we could not find so many of the relatives, and the name is actually Vere. Other facts and birth certificates do indicate this as fact.

Individual Note:
According to information given by KelvenSpratling in 2003, Edward entered the military life using the name of John Summers. Was decorated with Victory, British and Star Medals see Campaign decoration copy. He served in the Royal regiment Of Artillery and joined up in 1902 declaring his age as 24 years, 1 month. He was 5ft.,4 1/2" tall with blue eyes. He declared his birth place as Maidstone Kent, occupation labourer. He declared his next of kin as his father and his elder brother but named them both as Summers. He served in India, Ireland and France. After the initial period of enlistment he signed up for a further period. He was a driver with RSA and at one stage was demoted back to driver after being caught as drunk in Barracks. His militaryrecords show that a tremendous effort was made by the ministry and Essex police to find his next of kin after he was killed in action and there is a copy of correspondence in his military record and a record of the interview with his mother in Exxes from the police.
